Book Description
For more than two years, one book has taken over Germany's hardcover and paperback bestseller lists, reaching number one in Der Spiegel and setting off a frenzy in bookstores: The Swarm. Whales begin sinking ships. Toxic, eyeless crabs poison Long Island's water supply. The North Sea shelf collapses, killing thousands in Europe. Around the world, countries are beginning to feel the effects of the ocean's revenge as the seas and their inhabi-tants begin a violent revolution against mankind. In this riveting novel, full of twists, turns, and cliffhangers, a team of scientists discovers a strange, intelligent life force called the Yrr that takes form in marine animals, using them to wreak havoc on humanity for our ecological abuses. Soon a struggle between good and evil is in full swing, with both human and suboceanic forces battling for control of the waters. At stake is the survival of the Earth's fragile ecology -- and ultimately, the survival of the human race itself. The apocalyptic catastrophes of The Day After Tomorrow meet the watery menace of The Abyss in this gripping, scientifically realistic, and utterly imaginative thriller. With 1.5 million copies sold in Germany -- where it has been on the bestseller list without fail since its debut -- and the author's skillfully executed blend of compelling story, vivid characters, and eerie locales, Frank Schatzing's The Swarm will keep you in tense anticipation until the last suspenseful page is turned.

Deep
Great novel, decent translation. Despite some lengths (needed to develop the characters), The Swarm takes you where few books usually go : Deep...

very good book
I picked up this book after reading Natural Selection. Similar base storylines - creatures of the sea evolving. This book is a very big book - about 800 pages and therefore will likely only be found in hardcover version. The length could have been pared down quite a bit, but having said that, I still enjoyed virtually the entire book. I was impressed with the knowledge of the Canadian Pacific Coast - having grown up near that area. I was also impressed with the sensitivity the author had for Canada's native peoples. The science in the book was too far reaching for me to know whether it was completely realistic or not, but for the storyline, that didn't seem to matter. The different individual events in the story were interesting, but my only complaint would be that the punch line was a bit disappointing and the ending was a tiny bit hokey given the huge lead up to it.
This is an excellent book, well written and I'm sure there's something in it for everybody.

Best Book I've Read in a Long Time
I don't believe in giving away the story... or ending. So short of that, this is a great story, very well told. Good pace and depth in the characters and story line, and very plausible even though fairly fantastic. So if you're prone to nightmares, this one may not be for you.
This author has won awards in Germany for his fiction and I read the German version. I had trouble putting it down long enough to get some sleep. ...not sure I'd recommend reading it on the beach though...

Great summer read
I wont go on and on about the book, but this is a great summer read. A total thriller, I had a hard time putting it down. Most of the other reviews already give an outline of the plot. The Writer must have done reams of research to tell his this story
The only drawback are the obvious political leanings of the writer. He doesn't especially care for Americas role in the world and it comes through loud and clear. On one side are the sophisticated European Scientists willing to ask the hard questions and look for logical solutions. On the other are the crude Cartoonish Americans who are basically at the root of all of the problems, and whose crude military knee-jerk solutions just make things worse. Oh well, it was still a good book.

VERY GOOD BOOK! ( miss-jay-2008 )
This book is great. It was better than i have expected. Its a very intelligent written book and Frank did a great job doing his research. I admire how he put so much knowledge in this book. The Story keeps you going and you wonder what will happen next. There is one chapter that i didnt like when one of the main charakters went home and did some soul searching (I thought that was boring) but its been only 10 pages.
If you want to gain some knowledge and look for a interesting story that will blow your mind, this is the book to read. I highly recommend it!
