Product Description
To meet your need for the effective board preparation this review book precisely mirrors the written Board exam. Psychiatry Board Review is the ideal self-study and pre-test manual for candidates for the written Part 1 of the Boards in Psychiatry. Its format creates the perfect high-yield source, consisting of four self-tests with 150 questions each, paralleling the format, subject matter, balance, and content of the Psychiatry written exams. Because your time is valuable, this book will help you focus your studies on material that has a high likelihood of appearing on the actual Boards.

  • Allows for easy self study and exam preparation with an Individual test format.
  • Simulates test conditions by allowing you to take self-timed tests.
  • Provides a stand-alone source, eliminating the need for additional materials.
  • Focuses on high-yield topics, such as neurology and visual material (patient photos, imaging, micrographs).
  • Uses a multiple-choice question format that mirrors the examination style, to prepare you for the exact type of questions and conditions you'll experience when taking the test.
  • Includes a CD-ROM to simulate computerized Boards.
  • Provides comprehensive answer explanations.

Product Reviews:
good review source ( drbajpayi )
I bought this book to prepare for the PRITE exams during my residency and found it to be of good educational value. Some questions are very easy but overall I would recommend book to anyone preparing for a great score on PRITE.
  Not enough................. ( eswati )
This book did not prepare me for the boards at all!!!!!!! The questions are much much difficult on the test compared to this book. Also, CD-ROM does not let you take the test like you are taking real test.
  BEST REVIEW MANUAL
This review manual was terrific! It was focused, similar to board question format and divided the material between psychiatry and neurology appropriately for exam study.
I had limited study time and finances...I felt well prepared for the actual board exam after doing the questions in this manual and I passed well!
This review book is a MUST HAVE!
  Great for MOC, too ( solar456 )
I took the MOC exam today, 15 years after my original ABPN certification. Not that easy to find study resources for the Maintenance of Certification exam. This general Boards review is appropriate for the MOC, though MOC is more clinical mgt. and less basic science than Part I.

PROs:
-A bargain: hundreds of dollars less than the modules and journal courses offered by the APA press (especially if you aren't a member) and way less than the MOC course ($1500) I located.
-Comprehensive: 600 exam q's divided into 4 tests, new material and some already covered in each one.
-Extremely time-efficient, with correct answer and the 4 incorrect answers explained with each question.
-Exact format of exam: computerized (if you use the disc), single answer multiple choice, includes automatic 90 second countdown timer( MOC is 200 q's in 5 hours).
-Very detailed neurology and genetic syndromes**(SEE BELOW)

CONs:
-1 or 2 answers give incorrect info, the one I recall is pinpoint pupils are a sign of heroin withdrawal. A different question correctly lists that with signs of heroin intoxication. It's 2 (I think) that I caught, a tiny percentage, just something to be aware of.
-Minor issue, kind of funny, a little distracting, is missing hyphens throughout, thus 7090% of pt's have so and so, treatment of SAD is 26 hours of bright light daily.

Differences vs MOC: Many more TCA q's in book, many more q's about ego defenses and appropriate psychotherapy options for X,Y or Z disorder on test, neuro is much more basic on test.

**-Very detailed neurology and genetic syndromes: for the MOC only, much complex than the exam. CAVEAT: This probably doesn't apply to the initial ABPN Part I exam. Lindsay's review here found the neuro on target. A great resource to pair with this book's explanations of stroke and other neuropathology syndromes is the Washington U med school's awesome Neuroscience Tutorial [...]

Excellent resource, highly recommended. Good Luck!

  great neuro questions
I found this book to have the best neuro review questions of the various books I tried. They were detailed enough and plentiful enough. Most of the other books did not have enough and the neuro board exam book I tried was too out of my league. This one's neuro questions were right on target. I just wish I could have found a book with even more neuro questions like the one this one had. I did pass in the end, but I sure felt I could have used much more neuro preparation.
